Classic Cottage Sideboard

It's been a while since I've painted a distressed white piece of furniture... When I first started painting furniture 5-6 years ago, I painted most pieces white or off-white and distressed them.  While not everything was painted this way, I started veering away to experiment and try new "looks". I'll go through phases of paint...like black furniture, a favorite paint color, etc.
I usually have a vision in my head of what I want a piece of furniture to look like before I start painting and I didn't plan on painting this sideboard white, but I knew that I wanted to distress it and/or use dark wax or glaze to bring out all the details.  I started off mixing some custom colors with my paints and tried them out on some areas and just didn't like anything!

I was using the white paint (ASCP Pure White) to mix colors with and when I put the white on a tester area, I loved the contrast with the dark wood and I knew that beautiful wood would come through after distressing the white away as well.  Sometimes a piece of furniture just dictates a certain paint treatment and I went with it...
I love, love the dark wood on this piece and wanted to leave plenty of it to be seen so I left the drawer fronts and tops the natural wood.  I also added just a hint of color with some ASCP Florence, changed out the drawer knobs, and waxed/buffed it.
It's nice to go back to some "tried and true" paint treatments!  I'm also excited to announce that this sideboard and several other of my furniture pieces will be moving into SuzAnna's Antiques up in N. Raleigh (9300 Durant Rd.) tomorrow!  I'm starting off with a small booth for now, but I'm excited to start officially selling furniture in a retail location again...it's been a couple years with the big move and all!

This is such a pretty transformation of your sideboard, Kristen. I am working on some ivory and dark stain projects with my husband--hope to have them done before too much longer! I love the combination of the dark and light colors together.

The contrast and the white highlighted by dark showing through with the distressing does the trick. Great eye and imagination. It's a treasure!

A girl after my own heart! I just finished my buffet and have it posted. I was going to go the route you took but decided to go all white with a dark top. Love the contrast on yours though.

Oh this piece is fabulous! I have a buffet that is very similar to this. A few years back I painted it distressed black and left the top wood grain. Now everyone is painted them white. I love how you did yours!

beautiful job, kristen! i love the two toned look on this one and the way you did it. i am the same way- phases of colors or treatments, and when i started in 2007 most things i painted white. or aqua, because i will always love that color.

WOW! This is pure genius and my jaw hit the floor when I seen it at Primitive & Proper link party. I HOPE I can find a piece like this and then remember to do it like this if I do! ;) I've long loved the wood tones with white paint, but this is just over the top stunning!

I need to find time to come visit more often.
This post is full of so many clever ideas and I especially like how you used electrical conduit for your bay window curtain rod!
Thank you for sharing,
