Details in the Dining Room

As I mentioned last week when I shared my Green and Natural Thanksgiving Tablescape, I promised to share the details, sources, paint color, etc of the latest dining room makeover in our rental house...

It has taken me longer than I wanted to get this post done because I've been trying to get decent pictures of the room which accurately showed the color of the walls, but if there is anything to remind me of my poor photography skills, it is this room!  I feel like I've really just been "getting by" with photography as my focus in the past has been keeping up with the booths, shows, kids, etc, but I have a little bit more time now so I hope to be working on some new skills soon.
In case you missed the before...  Despite what you see, the paint needed serious freshening and numerous dry wall holed patched up...and the light fixture had to go (at least while I'm living here).  As I mentioned, I'm not going to go crazy fixing this place up... We are here for a short period of time and I don't want to spend much on a rental home.  In case you were wondering, I was given permission to paint by the landlord. So here is what I did to the room...
First of all, I painted the chair rail and everything below it in a fresh coat of white paint.  It's hard to tell in the photographs, but for me, this was the biggest impact in the whole room.  Nothing like fresh, white paint to clean things up!
Second, I knew that I wanted to go with a shade of green walls.  As I mentioned HERE, I knew I wanted something fresh... not sage, not minty, but a nice medium green.  With all the white below the chair rail, as well as the linen upholstered dining bench and chairs, I knew that I could go a little more saturated with the green as well.  As much as I love neutral interiors, I just need some color in my life right now :)
I was fairly certain which shade of green I was going to paint the walls, but at that time, I hadn't found just the right window treatments or fabric to make my own yet, so I held off on painting.  I always get the fabrics/rugs selected before start painting!  Trust me, you'll save yourself some decorating dilemmas as it is much easier to match paint to fabric then to find the right fabric to match paint already on the walls.
One of my favorite sources for fabric is a local outlet in Burlington, NC called "Loomcraft"...
I just love this place!  They have some of the best prices and selection that I've seen anywhere (and great customer service too).  As I was shopping for "just the right fabric" for the draperies, I spotted Waverly's "Tranquil Trees"...
The fabric was just the right look for the room with my rustic table, plus the linen background is an exact match to the fabric on the bench and chairs.  More importantly, it just spoke to me...  I grew up in the Northwest and my family went camping nearly every year.  My husband, the kids, and I love to be outdoors, so it was a fitting choice and only $10/yd.
My mom was over visiting and she helped whip up the curtains (she's an awesome seamstress).  I had them made in 96'' length so I can use them in the next house if there are high ceilings.  Hanging curtains high also is a great design trick to making your windows look taller.  The acorn curtain rods are from Target and I hung little wicker plates that I picked up at the thrift store and painted in Chalk Paint.
I chose Sherwin William's Ryegrass for the walls and it really is a great green...despite these poor representations of the color! It looks way better in person!
The rustic light fixture was a find in High Point for around $50.  I'll swap the old one back in it's place when we move out and maybe I'll find a new home for this one later down the road.
I also hung a couple of breadboards and an antique hay fork up on the walls for more of the rustic look...
But one of my favorite things in the room, besides the curtains, is the inexpensive tree botanicals that I framed up and the chunky picture frame my husband made from old, salvage moulding.  I had a pair of these barnwood frames that I've had butterfly prints in, but I felt like I needed something different with the tree fabric...
I found tons of great copyright free botanical prints at Vintage Printables and picked out two Autumn tree images and had them printed for only $8 a piece at Costco.  The paper quality is great and with that inexpensive price, I can afford to switch the prints up with the season... I already have the winter prints ready to go!  One thing to remember is that most of the images are copied from books so there can be faded words, ink, etc in the background.  I think it just makes them have more character...
As I mentioned, I'll be changing these out for the seasons and I have plans for that large frame that I'll be sharing soon!
I hope the details of the dining room have helped a bit!  I had a few inquiries about the curtain fabric and even though I purchased it from a local outlet, I did find it online HERE in case you're interested.

  3. You did a beautiful job, Kristen! I love the color and painting the bottom portion of the walls in white made a big difference. I'm glad to hear your landlord let you paint. That fabric is gorgeous! It works so well with what you've got going on in here, too. You may not be there long, but you've really given this room some personality and made it a lovely room to be in while you are there.

  6. Love love love your room! You really have the "touch". I have passed by Loomcraft many time traveling from Raleigh to Winston and have been intrigued by their sign. Now I KNOW I must plan a trip there! The thing in your room that really has my heart is the light fixture. What are some of your favorite places in High Point to shop? Any chance I might find that fixture still available? We've built a farmhouse and are putting the finishing touches on it - would love one of these!

I would love to know where you got that light fixutre... You mentioned "High Point"; is that a store or a location? I absolutely love it and have been looking for months for something exactly like that.

  11. I've been to the Loomcraft store too. I live in the RTP (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill). Let me know if you want the names of some other great fabric outlets in the area and I will send them to you. There is no better shopping trip than to all of the great fabric stores here in North Carolina!

  16. Very pretty Kristen. I was wondering if you could do a post on the process of the Costco prints. I recently enlarged a graphic fairy print, but it cost me $25 for approximately 24x30 inch print.
