I admit it...there have been many times in the past year since moving to the south that I get homesick. It's been a big change...like living in another world.
It's a world of almost perpetual sunshine compared to the snowy Northwest where I've always lived...and I like love that! My kids miss the snow - sledding, skiing, mittens, snowmen, snowball fights. I admit that sometimes when see a picture or two from friends back home with beautiful snow-covered trees that I get a pang of homesickness - or maybe it's just missing everything that's familiar?
Instead of being surrounded by rolling hills with majestic wheat fields of the Palouse or out picking boxes and boxes of the most delicious apples in the entire world from Greenbluff, it's fields of tobacco, sorghum, and cotton...
Even though, I can't bring it home to make pies and applesauce, I find that these beautiful, fluffy fields of "Southern Snow" make me feel a little better... a bit of a consolation for all that was left behind...
...And they make the most beautiful bouquets too!

I have never lived anywhere west of Durham NC and currently live in Sneads Ferry near Topsail Island.
Our daughter and her family
live in CT, so we admire their adaptability. I also
admire yours, because the South is very different from
Washington. Being homesick is normal, especially until you have lived in NC to the point it really feels like home.
Loved your creative use of the cotton, it is beautiful to see in the fields and also beautiful the way you used it to decorate!
Your arrangement under the cloche is stunning. The rusty stand really sets it off with the contrast. so gorgeous. You are a very talented young woman.
ReplyDeleteKnow what you mean about moving from northwest to south. We moved from Mt to KY and most of my friends told me I wouldn't be happy there. I'd lived in the west most of my life and I had a very hard time adjusting to the weather and the ideas, attitudes. I'm alot older than you (72) so that much more set in my ideas so I take the blame for not being happy there. The weather was very hard on me as I have asthma, arthritis and allergies.
I'd lived in San Diego area for 21 yrs. where women are taught about their rights, etc. so I didn't take too well to the attitudes to women in KY. Even our dil thought I was too independent.
We lived out in country 32 miles from Bowling Green and it was like going back to the 40's at least, weird.
Mt was very dry and KY so humid, 100% in the summer with 100 degrees, phew. I'm just not a southern kind of gal. Admire people that have been born and live out their lives there. They're warm wonderful folks.
So we moved to CO after 5 yrs. in KY. Hope you have a happy life there. I've been where you live so know it's a gorgeous area.

ReplyDeleteI understand how you must feel, Kristen. But I personally am glad that you're here or else I never would have had the pleasure of getting to know you! If you have a hankering for some snow, you can always drive just a few short hours away to the mountains...
ReplyDeleteI think that the "South" has truly embraced you!!...We are sad that there are days of feeling homesick and that will most likely never go away...but we are happy that you have landed here in the South!...Your centerpieces of cotton were stunning at the conference...and your cloche of cotton is simply such an elegant tribute to the South...
