I picked up this cute dresser at a local auction... I loved the shape, key holes and was a prime candidate for painting. Here's the before (taken with my phone):
If you've worked with milk paint before, you'll know it's a bit unpredictable, but there wasn't any crackling or flaking this time around. The more "thirsty" the wood is, the more likely the paint will adhere and not chip (without the bonding agent).
Normally I lightly sand the finish smooth after two coats of paint, then seal with wax, but this time I distressed after waxing just to have a little more control over the process. I also painted the drawers out in Old White Chalk Paint and waxed with Howard's wax because I had them on hand... Don't be afraid to mix and match brands, types of paint and topcoats! There is nothing in the rules that says a piece of furniture has to be all Chalk Paint, milk paint, latex, acrylic etc. Most of my furniture makeovers are mix...
You may have noticed that I no longer have my perfect little furniture staging area in the foyer of my house any longer. I used to lug every piece in, style it, photograph it before hauling it away to the shop, but there isn't one wall where I can do this in the rental... I'll have to figure something out :)
Speaking of shop... I've been gathering goodies for the past couple of weeks in anticipation of moving into Shirley's booth at the Melville Trading Company in Mebane, NC. I really wasn't looking into starting another booth anytime soon, but since downsizing to our rental and the prospect of moving again next Summer makes me cringe at the amount of antique/vintage goods that I have in storage.
I've been buying and selling for a while now so letting go of my favorite things is really no biggie to me anymore. So if you're local the Greensboro/Raleigh area and you've ever had an eye on any of the furniture from my old home, you're likely to see it in the booth! I'll also be finding and working on new projects too.
Shirley and I worked on the booth this past weekend...fluffing and having fun. I didn't get any great pictures because of the lighting at the time. We have a mix of rustic items like tobacco baskets, olive buckets, demijohns, blue seltzer bottles, ladders, painted furniture, industrial bar stools, street signs, etc. Shirley also brought in her show-stopping upside down flocked Christmas tree that is filled with her beautiful ornaments. Mebane, NC is a great little town with the cutest street (Clay St.) full of boutiques so make sure you check it out if you're in the area.
