Quick and Easy DIY Coasters

I'm not really a "coaster person"...with three little kids that drive toy cars, play games, and put their feet up on our wood family room coffee table, I tend not to worry too much about a cup or two placed on it.  At this point in my life, there is a reason why I like "distressed" furniture!  I'm lucky enough to have a cozy area in my "formal" living room (or as the kids call it, "Mom's room) where I like to sneak away with a cup of coffee or tea, a book, or my laptop.  This is where I blog...
Unlike our chunky wood family room coffee table, this one is predominately glass and was handmade by my step-dad out of an old window that opens up and holds my collection of bird's nests...
Since the glass pretty much shows all my cup rings, I thought I'd whip up some quick and super-easy coasters. Here's how I make them:
Gather your supplies.  You'll need:
1) Package of natural stone travertine tile - you can get these at your local hardware store pretty inexpensively.  I bought mine at Home Depot and contains nine tiles.
2)Assorted stamps of choice
3)Stamp pad in color(s) of choice.  I picked out this teal color at Michael's to coordinate with my curtains.
4)Cork or felt pads with adhesive backing.  I found the cork pads at the Dollar Tree and the package contains 36 pads - just the right amount for my package of tiles!
5)Spray can of clear sealer - matte or gloss, whichever look you prefer.
First, give your tiles a good brushing-off.  Natural stone out of the package can be a little dusty.  I apply the cork/felt backing first so I don't scratch the table I'm working at, but you can apply these at anytime.  The next step is pretty self-explanatory...just firmly apply an ink-loaded stamp directly on the tile...
In no time at all, you can finish a whole set using any design you'd like...
After stamping, set them aside until the ink has dried.  The last step is applying a couple of coats with the spray sealer to protect the ink from running and before you know it, you have some one-of-a-kind custom coasters!
As I mentioned above, this package contained nine tiles so it's easy to make a set for you and a friend...
I actually made quite a few of these a while back from a large lot of travertine tiles that I picked up a garage sale, but I never made any for myself.  This is part of my batch from back then for some more inspiration...
There are endless possibilities!

Common Ground's Marketplace Mondays

Have you ever visited Debra over at Common Ground?  I just love her blog, her style, and she's a wonderful inspiration to all of us!  Debra's been hosting a wonderful link party (Vintage Inspiration Friday) every Friday for a while that I love to link my projects up to and visit all those great inspiring bloggers out there.  If you haven't visited it, you'll have to check it out this week...

Today is also the very first Marketplace Monday over at Common Ground!  It's a great new link party to highlight new and creative sellers and products like items from Etsy or web boutiques and it's open to anyone to link up what they create to sell.  It's a really great idea and I'm thrilled that she also featured some of my typewriter jewelry this week!  She's got some great items featured like french grain sack wall hangings (I'm drooling over these), adorable tea towels, and candleholders.  Head on over there and check it out!

Typewriter Key Bracelets

After working on several painting projects the last couple of weeks, I thought I'd take a little break and work on some jewelry projects...painting dining chairs can do that to you!  A few weeks back, I posted a tutorial on how to make typewriter jewelry, including these unique little bracelets, but I thought I'd share my recent batch with you.

These are so fun to make...finding inspirational or fun phrases in my stock of keys...
Since each typewriter has only one of each letter, it can be hard to spell things out sometimes!  In case your interested in any of these, I just listed them in my Etsy shop! If you'd like to make something similar for yourself and wondering where I got the materials, I'd be happy to help...

It's been a good year since I've had my Etsy shop stocked.  I sold as much as I could before moving last summer and it's taken me a bit of time to get back into the groove again!  I've been adding these wax seal pendants over the last few weeks as well...
I still have quite a few of these classic typewriter key pendants to finish, but there are several finally up and listed now. Just not enough time in the day...

And lastly, I just got the materials to make some of my favorites...
These thick glass pendants magnify the images underneath and it's really fun to use different images.
These should be available in the next week or so!

Have a great weekend!

Just Because...

Like most of us women, I love fresh flowers!  It would be the ultimate luxury to have a fresh bouquet in the house at all times.
I always stop and smell the flowers whenever I see them in shops and stores...it's a quick pick-me-up, but I rarely indulge in cut flowers.  A potted plant, yes, but flowers that will wilt in days, I feel a bit guilty about purchasing even though they bring so much joy and life into the house.
Are you with me on this?  Do you indulge every now and then or feel guilty about buying flowers?
Luckily, my husband brought me these creamy roses home last week for Valentine's Day.  I've been enjoying seeing that beautiful sun illuminate them when I walk by and it's been making me think...
maybe I should buy a bouquet every now and then...just because!

An Art Desk for Lily

If you ask my sweet little kindergartner, Lily, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", she'll quickly reply "An artist!".  She's also a girl that craves a little color and like most girls her age, her choice is hot pink and I have to admit, since most of our home is neutrals, it's super fun to inject some happy color...
Since moving into our home, Lily's been craving a little place where she can come home from school, work on her homework (which she loves to do), and color to her heart's content...
and I've finally finished it for her this last week.  She was a happy girl when she came home from school to find all her craft supplies, stickers, notebooks, etc all organized in little buckets and boxes...

I've actually had this $60 desk for a while, but it's taken a bit to get it done as I needed to get the color scheme for Lily's new room all figured out.  Here's the before...
Here's the after with two coats of ASCP Pure White chalk paint Behr's Watermelon Pink for the accents...
It also took a bit to find just the right chair, but this $5 find was worth waiting for...
Of course, it didn't look like this before... picture horrendous mustard/gold fabric that had seen better days!  Watermelon pink houndstooth fabric, some fun pom-poms and buttons for tufting, and it's now a sweet seat for my little Lily.
But Lily will say that her favorite part of her new art desk is a special little chalk area that I made with hot pink chalkboard paint where there used to be leather on this old desk...
When she came to me to ask how to spell "going" and "get", I knew she was up to something...
That girl knows how to melt her mommy's heart!
All in all, this whole art wall came in around $100...cuteness on a budget!

Wahoo! I'm in...Luckett's Spring Market!

Farm Chicks booth 2011
I'm just a tad excited... you see I have antique show fever.  It's something that I've had since my first show (The Farm Chicks Show back in 2008).  Having left my career at a CPA firm (yes, I'm an accountant in my former life) to stay home with my then two-year old, I felt I needed a little something on the side that I loved to do and to help keep me busy at home. After shopping the amazing Farm Chicks Show for the previous 3-4 years, I took a giant leap, applied and got in!

I was so nervous that first show that I think my hands were shaking as I was making change for my first sale!  But I was hooked... in a big way...
Farm Chicks booth 2009
It's hard to describe the energy, creativeness sheer-geniusness, passion, and friendliness that is part of this show and many others that I was so incredibly privileged to be a part of the past several years.  The shows truly became part of my life and I was lucky enough to make some great friendships with some women that inspire me so much!  It didn't matter if I was 8 months pregnant, hauling infants around, working full-time again, or getting ready to move across the country... I was there at those shows because it's my passion and I loved getting out there and meeting so many great people.

My mom, Summer, Lily helping load up the furniture!
Anyway, back to the reason I'm excited... Since moving to Raleigh a little over a week after the last Farm Chicks Show, I've been a bit bummed about not being able to part of it all anymore.  Well, once again, I took a leap and applied last week for the Luckett's Spring Market May 19-20!

I honestly didn't think I'd be able to get into the show since there is an extremely small number of vendor spaces left for new vendors and it's first come, first served basis, but I got this yesterday in the mail...
I think I did a happy dance at the mailbox!  Yes, it's about a six hour drive up to Leesburg, VA to haul furniture, but after moving all of our stuff 3,000 miles last summer, this should be cake :)
I've got lots of work to do, but it will be fun and I can't wait to meet so many new east coast vendors and shoppers!

On another note... I'm happy to announce that Sophia's is the Blog of the Week over at Cedar Hill Ranch!  Anita is just fantastic and her blog is beautiful and inspirational...go check it out!

A Bit of Fancy

I just love furniture with ornate details.  I was lucky to find this fancy, frenchy side table a couple weekends ago.  I was smitten at first sight...I think I have a furniture sickness.
I found the table like this...

I wish I would have taken a better picture of the top of the table because it looks like it has a pretty design on it, but in reality, there were weird 70's swirls all over.  I had to paint over them, but I knew I wanted to keep some of the gold peeking through...just tone it down a bit.
I started tackling it with ASCP Pure White chalk paint a couple days ago and finally had time to finish it up today.  All those crevices in the detailing took a bit of time and quite a bit of paint...more than a small table should have taken, but it was worth it in the end.
Instead of completely painting over the gold with the intention of sanding the paint down to the gold later, I just carefully wiped off the paint with a damp towel as I went along.  Even with using fine-grit sandpaper to distress paint to a metallic finish underneath (i.e. gold frame, etc), I have a habit of taking more off than I want...
so I'll be using the damp-rag technique if I want to save those metallic finishes in the future.  I'm thinking if I ever pick a color for my master bedroom, then this table will go in there?  Knowing me, it will be moved around my house about six times before it lands in it's resting place...
Everyone having a Happy Valentine's Day so far?  Any plans on getting dolled up for a night on the town with your loved one?
Not me... just a cozy night in with the family making pink cupcakes and eating waaaayyyy too much sugar!  Happy Valentine's Day!
