It's been a while since I've painted a distressed white piece of furniture... When I first started painting furniture 5-6 years ago, I painted most pieces white or off-white and distressed them. While not everything was painted this way, I started veering away to experiment and try new "looks". I'll go through phases of paint...like black furniture, a favorite paint color, etc.
I usually have a vision in my head of what I want a piece of furniture to look like before I start painting and I didn't plan on painting this sideboard white, but I knew that I wanted to distress it and/or use dark wax or glaze to bring out all the details. I started off mixing some custom colors with my paints and tried them out on some areas and just didn't like anything!
I was using the white paint (ASCP Pure White) to mix colors with and when I put the white on a tester area, I loved the contrast with the dark wood and I knew that beautiful wood would come through after distressing the white away as well. Sometimes a piece of furniture just dictates a certain paint treatment and I went with it...
I love, love the dark wood on this piece and wanted to leave plenty of it to be seen so I left the drawer fronts and tops the natural wood. I also added just a hint of color with some ASCP Florence, changed out the drawer knobs, and waxed/buffed it.It's nice to go back to some "tried and true" paint treatments! I'm also excited to announce that this sideboard and several other of my furniture pieces will be moving into SuzAnna's Antiques up in N. Raleigh (9300 Durant Rd.) tomorrow! I'm starting off with a small booth for now, but I'm excited to start officially selling furniture in a retail location again...it's been a couple years with the big move and all!
